The panel shows what Cloudflare currently reports on its status page: incidents by service, affected data center locations, and planned maintenance. Cloudflare runs a very large network, so it often has scheduled maintenance somewhere. Most of it has no visible effect.
Why Cloudflare problems look like your problems
Cloudflare sits in front of a big share of websites and APIs. When it has trouble, visitors see errors on your domain, with your name in the address bar. It looks like your site is broken, and support tickets go to you.
Reading Cloudflare error pages
Cloudflare error pages usually show a diagram of the browser, Cloudflare and the host, with a mark showing which link failed. That diagram is the fastest clue.
| Error | What it usually means |
|---|
| 502 or 504 with the host marked as the problem | Cloudflare is fine; your origin server did not respond properly |
| 520 to 527 | Cloudflare-specific codes, mostly about origin connection, SSL or timeouts between Cloudflare and your server |
| 500-series with Cloudflare marked as the problem | More likely a Cloudflare-side issue; check the status page |
| 1000-series errors | Configuration issues, such as DNS pointing to a prohibited IP or a blocked request |
Codes 520 to 527 are often blamed on Cloudflare but usually start at the origin: a crashed app, a firewall blocking Cloudflare's IP ranges, or an expired origin certificate.
Quick checks
- Bypass Cloudflare. Request your origin directly by its IP or an unproxied hostname. If it fails, the problem is your server.
- Check the Ray ID and location on the error page. Incidents are often limited to certain locations, so users in one region may see errors while others do not.
- Check the status page for that location. Data center codes are listed with their state.
- Check recent changes in your Cloudflare settings: firewall rules, page rules, Workers and SSL mode. A rule change can block legitimate traffic in ways that look like an outage.
- Check other Cloudflare products you use. DNS, Workers, R2, Access and others have their own entries on the status page.
During a Cloudflare incident
- Avoid big configuration changes. Switching DNS away during a short incident can cause a longer outage than the incident itself, because DNS changes take time to spread.
- Consider pausing proxying for critical hostnames only if you have tested that your origin can handle direct traffic and is secured for it.
- Post on your status page. Make sure your status page is not itself served through the same affected path.
- Watch updates. Cloudflare incidents often move from "investigating" to "identified" to "monitoring" fairly quickly, with regional recovery happening in stages.
Following Cloudflare with Outage Clock
Add Cloudflare and, on paid plans, choose the services you use, for example CDN, DNS and Workers. This keeps routine regional maintenance out of your channel. Alerts include the latest update and are delivered to email, Slack, Teams or a webhook. Pro's maintenance calendar shows planned Cloudflare work next to your other vendors' maintenance.
Questions
Why do I see maintenance listed almost every day?
Cloudflare operates many data centers and maintains them on a rolling basis. Traffic is usually rerouted to nearby locations during that work.
My site shows a 522. Is Cloudflare down?
Usually not. A 522 means Cloudflare could not complete a connection to your origin in time. Check that your server is up and not blocking Cloudflare's IP ranges.
